The original road-trip

OK, I’ve long been hooked on travel shows, kinda an armchair traveller since I usually can’t afford the time & money to go to all those cool, exotic locations. That and probably the influence of repeated reading of Henry Reed’s Journey and similar books as a kid. Recently I’ve been enjoying a couple of Michael Palin’s shows, Around the World in 80 Days and Full Circle that have been running on Bravo. Another fascinating looking one that is upcoming October 6th on PBS is Horatio’s Drive. It’s the story of Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson’s road-trip across the US one-hundred years ago. Not only no rest stops or Stuckey’s but not even paved roads or gas stations. Back when driving across this country resembled a modern expedition across the remote, undeveloped parts of Africa. Having trekked back and forth across the country a few times myself — abet with all the modern luxuries and conveniences (like paved roads and AAA service) — this trip back in time and across the country looks like it will be quite interesting.
