New toy, new feature

mood: mobloggy

I’ve been wanting to upgrade my cell phone for awhile now, the siren call of mobile Internet access and nifty cameras beaconing me. Finally I have made the plunge after four years on Alltel, drawn to T-Mobile by their cool phones with Bluetooth (and other kitchen sinks), flatrate Internet and generally favorable reviews. So I picked up a new toy, though I’m still waiting for the number port from Alltel to go thru (they claimed it’d take anywhere from 3 hours to 5 days…). Meanwhile, I’ve been playing with the camera side of things since its not much use otherwise at the moment.

Of course you can see where this is leading to, I’ve set up a moblog (MObile weBLOG) page for me to put up pics I take, tho have to wait until the phone is active to be able to do it in real-time (right now transferring the pics to the laptop & then sending them to the site). “Look, ma, content!” 8-)

My wife wants a sidekick to surf the internet while on the road. I hope you have more interesting things to take pictures of than my life typically does.

Sounds like a plan — she IM’s and you drive. 8-) The Sidekick’s full set of keys and larger screen definitely look like they’d be great if you can deal with the larger size (the 3650 is actually a little large for my taste, but the smaller Sony-Ericsson T610 got lousy ratings on phone reception — what these things supposedly are for…). Get the camera attachment and she can moblog while ya travel and we can all see where youse been. 8-) SIMSI is real easy to setup. [still waiting on the number port…]

The problem is that T-mobile has lousy coverage. I was with them, and my phone wouldn’t work at my folks house, her folks house, or the sister inlaw house. That is when we need phones the most.

Yeah, that’s the problem with GSM, coverage can be spotty (esp outside urban areas). Ended up figuring I spend 99.9% of my time in such, though, so may as well give a GSM carrier a try since I like the other features. Still need to see how coverage here in Tucson is while actually using the phone, but the signal strength indicator seems to get decent readings. My place’s is a little so-so, but has been that way on any other carrier it seems. And, yes, still waiting on the port…
