New toy and stuff

Well, it looks like I won’t be getting my internet at home until something like August 16th, but at least I should have phone and satellite TV starting Friday. Some nice news on the internet connection, I’ll be getting faster ADSL instead of slower ISDN, and will have to see what I get for ADSL speed since I think it may be faster than cable in the US.

Anyways, I did at least get a new toy to keep me occupied for a little bit (well, at least last night as I was setting it up). Its the Epson PM-A850 scanner/printer combo and I’ll have to say it produces pretty nice results. I was stunned at how huge and tank like it was, since I usually figured Japanese models were designed to be less space consuming. Shakes the table pretty good when printing too. It also scans negatives, so I’ll have to get some of those from home sometime to work on again (since I couldn’t get my old SCSI film scanner working with a firewire adaptor when I was back in the US).

Heh, stunned the people at DeoDeo when I wanted to just carry it home instead of waiting for them to bring it by Friday when they install the satellite. It wasn’t that heavy or large, really, just a little bit.

Otherwise the main item of interest yesterday was one of the middle school english teachers came by to show me around the middle school. Definitely a little on the old side, but seems they at least attempt to keep it up. Looks like they have one first year class (7th grade), two second (8th) and two third (9th) if I remember correctly. Each class is around a couple dozen, except for the 1st year which I think was a little over 30. I’ll be going there on Thursdays and Fridays and classes start there the last week of August. I won’t be having my first classes with them until the first week of September because I’ll be at a JET Japanse language & culture school the first week of school.

In addition to the classroom team teaching, I have a classroom I can set up as an “international zone” that students can come to during lunch for stuff like music, videos or games that expand their exposure to the outside world beyond what we do in class. Still got to think on that one about what to do and how to decorate the place (James has some San Diego Padres posters up and such). I’m thinking kitchy southwestern chili pepper lights to replace the xmas ones he had up… 8-)
