Another week, another typhoon… |
More or less literally, since the one rattling my windows now is the record 10th one of this season — an I’ve been here around 12 weeks. Main impact for me on this one was canceling plans to go into Hiroshima this afternoon. Oh, well, there’s always this weekend or next week (assuming the next one doesn’t hit then).
Went into the office this morning, it wasn’t raining too hard. They checked with the kindergarden to see if they were open, turns out they were. Discovered when I got there that only about a 1/3 of the kids were there and so we did a combined class of the three grades. It was a little crazier as result, mixing the younger & older students, but at least all three teachers were there too.
Did a bit of the parts of the body, starting with the “standard” song here of “Heads, shoulders, knees & toes” and expanding from there. That wasn’t active enough to engage them for long, so moved onto commands (”stand up”, “sit down”, “go over there”, “let go”…) for a bit. Finally did an extended game of “Duck, duck, goose”, err, “Dog, dog, cat” to try to wear them out. They really enjoyed it, though again with the mix of ages it was a little awkward (the younger ones sometimes didn’t get the idea they needed to run, for example, but the older ones had no problem).
Normally I only spend 30 minutes each of the three classes, with breaks in-between. So I usually only have to do one activity. This combined session probably lasted 90 minutes, so it was a little awkward deciding when to transition to something else. After the session, they told me to go home since the rain was getting stronger, so I left about an hour early.
Spent the afternoon mostly napping (I’m still a bit more sleepy than normal). The rain has continued pretty strongly all day, the forecasts have suggested we’d get around a 30-50 cm of rain out of this. Yes, around a foot of rain, as much as Tucson gets in a year. The mind, it boggles…
But other than rain and lots of wind rattling the windows, it hasn’t been bad here for me. Mukaihara is well inland, so the storm isn’t as strong. I’m far from the river, so no flooding that I’ve seen. I’m a ways from the hill, so no landslide worries at home (though I guess could affect the schools, it seems schools are required to be on steep hills or something). It does appear that they’re having some kind of drill at the fire-station next door. Seems like the strongest part has passed though, unless this is the eye or something…
