Well, my original Halloween plans didn’t have anything to do with the holiday. I was going to go on a hike. But Friday night I got a call from the hike organizer that it was canceled because of the forecast of rain (which never really happened here).
So instead I decided I’d go to a costume party at a Hiroshima night club called Club Chinatown. I spent most of the afternoon in the city looking for parts to make up my costume.
What did I decide to do? I got an idea from a web site and decided to go as a Twister board. I figured it would be a fun costume which would give me a good chance to interact with people. And it worked out pretty well.
I bought a Twister game at a local store (looks pretty much the same, just a little Japanese added to the spinner). I got a white sweat-suit and some thin foam fabric for the spots. Then I spent a bit of time at Starbucks drinking chai & cutting out circles. Why? Well, seemed the most comfortable place in the area & wondered if anyone would be curious enough to ask what I was doing. And indeed one woman did come over to ask & I managed to explain more-or-less in Japanese, which she reported back to her friends.
So here’s the result:
I initially had problems getting the things to stay on, I’d hoped to use double sided tape. No chance. But the 7-11 next door to the club had some safety pins, so with help from a couple other JETs that were at the party I had myself all made up.
The party was lots of fun, there were quite a few JETs that I knew there. Of my “neighbors”, Jack & Melissa were there in cross-dressed costumes. Quite a few of the costumes were pretty cool. There was a contest, I got chosen to be in it but didn’t win. However, Melissa’s hilariously immodest cross-dressing (think pantsless, a fuzzy ball & 8″ of PVC pipe…) won the “Funniest Costume” prize. Even if it didn’t win, my costume went over pretty well & I had a lot of fun with it.
As for the club, the music was a mixed bag. Earlier sets were kinda rough & hard to get into. The music towards the end was what I liked most, but I was too tired to dance by then. The population was a little sparse when I first showed up, but by 1am the floor was too crowded to really dance. Not a bad club, but it is missing one of the things I really like to have, a chill room. I have a hard time hearing people in noisy environments & a room off to the side that people can talk in is really good to have. Always liked that about Asylum in Tucson. Cover here has one, but the others I’ve been to haven’t.
After things started to wind down, I went over to POPEYE’s Media Cafe on Hondori to kill some time until the morning train home & nap a little. Once home, spent most of Sunday afternoon sleeping…
