Unexpected return to Kumamoto |
Well, I had a nice time at Kurokawa Onsen today. But I’ll write about that and Mt. Aso in more detail when I get home. Right now I’m back in Kumamoto city. I’ve been staying here the last couple days since its within a reasonable distance of Aso and is a real city with the conviences that entails (like internet cafes, which I’m using right now). My plan was to head on to Fukuoka tonight, wander around there a bit in the morning, then head home early in the afternoon. But, as you’ve probably heard, there was a fairly strong earthquake near Fukuoka this morning Japanese time. I apparently was on the bus between Aso & Kurokawa Onsen at the time, didn’t really notice anything. I’ve been told that it was noticed in Hiroshima, have to see if anything has fallen over at home or such. Anyways, I’ve been advised that there may still be aftershocks in the 6ish range, so I canceled my hotel and am staying in Kumamoto another night. Not sure if I would have made it to Fukuoka tonight anyways, the train schedule is a mess due to earthquake related delays.
I will be going thru Fukuoka tomorrow, though. Hopefully by then things will have settled down a bit more (both the earth and the trains). Its either that or take a ferry or plane, which I’d rather not do right now. Have to see how things go…
