But that’ll shortly change for me, at least for a week. I’m going to be heading back to Tucson for spring break. I’ll mostly be taking care of some business, catching up with family & friends and hopefully networking with old coworkers. Gotta start that job hunting for after JET… Anyways, I’ll be in town from late afternoon March 21st to very early morning March 29th. Get in touch if you’re interested in getting together or such while I’m in town. Cya!

I got back home a little after 11 PM last night. I decided to try to do the 16 hour trip from Tokyo to Hiroshima (well, actually it was Kawasaki to Mukaihara) in one marathon journey. Started 7:06 AM and arrived home at 11:18 PM. Almost all of that was either on trains or transfering between trains, I only had one layover of 44 minutes. In total, 11 transfers and about 920 km. The fare would normally been around $100, but using the Seishun 18 Kippu it was only about $20. There were a couple times I had to stand for a short while, but it wasn’t so bad overall. I did have the forethought to bring some drinks and snacks, though.

I’ve got one more day on my ticket to use before September 10th, so I’ll have to think about a day-trip somewhere close.

Today I slept in and piddled around the house a bit. School starts again tomorrow, but I’m hoping there won’t be too much to do on the first day of classes…

I had plans today to go to Miyajima to see the Tama-no-tori festival. Weather was pretty clear and looked good, so I headed off and arrived at the island a little before 11:30am. The event was supposed to start at 12:00pm according to the link above, so I figured I was doing good. Noon rolled around, still nothing going on at the site (I could see the set-up, there just wasn’t anyone around it). I wandered around a bit and eventually ran across a poster advertising the event — it indicated that things were to start at 11am… Doh! Apparently it was over pretty quickly, there were no obvious clues when I arrived that everything was already over. Too bad, I hadn’t been able to see it the previous years because it was on weekdays. Not that big of a loss I guess, but probably would have been fun. Gonna have to check the times more closely on these “last chance” events…

I wandered around and took yet more pictures of the island. Here’s one of a future samurai, or maybe fisherman, not quite sure:

Today was the 61st anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. I decided that since this is my last year, I should attend the memorial ceremonies in the morning. My first year, I’d just gotten here and hadn’t even visited Hiroshima yet — I think I watched the event on TV. Last year was the big 60th anniversary. It was obviously going to be a bit too big an event for my taste, so I decided to do the night-time lantern ceremony (where candle lanterns with messages written on them are floated down the river). It was quite pretty and moving. But I hadn’t attended the main memorial in the morning yet, so I got up early this morning to catch the 6:48 train into the city.

Even getting up that early was cutting things a bit close. The ceremony was to start at 8:00, I arrived at Peace Park at 8:15, just as the bell was tolling the time of the bomb blast. Most people stopped to observe a minute of silence, so I stood there reflecting on it, within sight of the A-Bomb Dome. I then made my way over to the area that the ceremony was taking place. As expected, it was very crowded but I managed to find a spot in the back with a good view (at least via 10x zoom). I’d missed the laying of the wreaths, but had arrived in time to catch Prime Minister Koizumi’s speech. One of the other speeches was delivered for UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who obviously couldn’t attend because he is currently busy trying to make peace. Anyways, I think this is the first time I’ve seen a world leader type person like this.

This week I’ve been in the office at the town culture center since its summer break and I don’t have any classes. I’ve mostly been doing stuff on the computer and surfing the web (”prepare for next semester?” - uh, this year my lesson planning has been effectively reduced to zero, so not much to do there).

This afternoon had a little change of pace, there was a shamisen and flute concert at the culture center. The shamisen is a traditional Japanese instrument, a bit like a banjo. Check out the Wikipedia link for some audio and video files. I’ve seen it played occasionally, it seems to be having a bit of a revival. Sometimes I see young guys playing it along Hondori in Hiroshima at night instead of the guitar.

Anyways, it was pretty good. The two guys played for about an hour and a half, with a bit of chatter mixed in. The audience was mostly seniors, but a class of the oldest kindergarten students attended the first half. So they mixed in some children’s songs along with the more traditional ones. They even did the opening theme to My Neighbor Totoro, to which the kids sang along. Really cute! (^o^)

I hope that I’ll write up a more reflective impression of my time here so far (but don’t hold your breath), but in case I don’t here’s a list of about 130 experiences I’ve had here over the last couple years. If I remember more, I’ll add them. Some are significant, some are pretty trivial, but its that combination that makes up life. I wonder how many more I’ll add during my remaining 365 or so days…

I probably could’ve found a nicer spot with a view of the water, but that’d meant wading thru more crowds (and I arrived just as it was beginning). After the show was over, I walked for about a half hour along the streetcar route until I saw some people getting off and then got on for the rest of the trip to the station.

I’d hoped to take a little trip to Korea, but I don’t think I’ve got the funds for that at the moment. Also, since its typhoon season its not the best time to visit there anyways (they had some nasty flooding last week from what I saw on the news). I’ll see if I can make that trip on one of the three day weekends in September or October. Temperatures will be more comfortable too…

So instead I’ll probably try to take some day trips or stuff like that. Haven’t really decided where yet, just have to see. Actually I should probably spend the entire time cleaning house. ^_^;; I do have a couple plans for this weekend: tomorrow I’ll go see some fireworks in Hiroshima and Sunday I’m going to a work party at a beer garden in Hiroshima.

Up until this morning I’d only noticed one earthquake in the almost two years I’ve been here. I’ve probably missed a few, especially since I’m usually a kinda heavy sleeper. But today’s in Oita Prefecture in Kyushu woke me at 5:01AM. Bed felt like someone was gently shaking it and kinda got my attention. Not sure how long it lasted, maybe a minute or two. Nothing damaged in the house that I’ve noticed, though a clock fell over (and I had to replace the battery for some reason…), a cup fell out of the kitchen cabinet (which I’d left open, oops) and a penguin figure fell off its shelf (there were no injuries). Apparently it was a 4 on the 1-7 Japanese scale in my area (which means shaking and things falling over, but no damage). It was a 5 in Hiroshima, according to reports, so maybe some slight damage in the city.

Anyways it definitely messed up the train schedule, probably throwing it at least an hour off. I had to ask my supervisor to drive me to Koda JHS as a result.
