Well, guess the 2008 election season is well underway, with candidates announcing left and right (in both the figurative and political senses). Still time for more to get in the race, for McCain to do some more pandering flip-flops & for Hillary to make more excuses about her war vote, though. Anyways, ran across 2008 Presidential Frontrunners Quiz which matches your stances with those known for the candidates (or at least until they change their positions if its one of the less stable ones).

Mine matches pretty well with my current leanings. I’m kinda thinking an Obama/Richardson ticket would be interesting.

As an American overseas, watching the upcoming elections in the U.S. is a different experience than being back home. I’m not immersed in continuous campaign ads and bickering in the news. I do get plenty of exposure to the big stories via CNN and BBC on satellite TV, but for local issues and candidates the web is my best resource.

Along the lines of “big news”, the defeat of pro-war and Bush-friendly Connecticut Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman has been the first glimmer of hope I’ve seen in a long time. Poll after poll show the American people no longer support Bush’s ill-conceived fiasco, with 60% now against the war in Iraq. Hopefully Lieberman’s loss will force politicians to start considering the will of the people on this issue and work on a way to extricate ourselves before it becomes a full-blown, three way, civil war.

OK, probably 2.5 years of that 4, I’ll have to see what happens after that. Alas, I fear the damage done to personal liberties & religious freedoms will be more long lasting than that as a result of the imminent vacancy(ies) in the Supreme Court. I just hope I don’t have to wear a bag over my head for the rest of the time here… 41

Or at least that’s where the Political Compass places me and I think really its not so far off. It puts me in the “libertarian left” quadrant with a “Economic Left/Right” of -3.62 and a “Libertarian/Authoritarian” of -5.95. I’ve long agreed with the personal liberty stance of the Libertarians but couldn’t quite get as gung-ho about the whole “anti-tax, let business do whatever it wants” side of things (just not ideologically pure enough, I guess). Generally felt myself a cross between a Green and a Libertarian, and this test seems to bear it out. And it looks like I’m in good company, the Dalai Lama is the closest international figure to me on the chart…
